One of the items that surfaces from the 2002 TriData Study was the need for unified testing and screening of new hires. Screening and testing applicants is very time consuming and expensive. This burden is multiplied when 13 different fire departments test the same applicants. They commit expensive testing resources, pay for a psychological evaluation and background investigations for the same
applicant. Almost all the departments in Volusia hire currently certified firefighter/EMT or firefighter/paramedics. There is a potential cost savings if a centralized training center was charged with conducting mental, physical and background checks on all perspective candidates.
